There was no sign of the Lizard, so the General consulted with Leon which way to go, as the new tunnel went off in two directions.

“It's up to you, Leon,” the General said. “Can you make out anything from the rock? The robots haven't got a clue, either has Marks. I tried to get an answer out of them, but neither had any good reason to pick one direction over the other. It’s down to you and your knowledge of the rock structures to tell us which way.”

“Geez, no pressure, eh? Maybe that Lizard will come back and let us know,” Leon said and winked. He ran his hand over the wall of the tunnel. It was smooth, like it had been carved and was cool to the touch. He looked the wall up and down, but it all looked the same to him. Finally, he settled on the branch of the tunnel that had the fresher-smelling air coming from it. “This way.”

“How do you know?” the General asked.

“I don't. Not for sure. But usually the air has been flowing down from the surface, haven't you noticed that?”

“Sure, of course. But I was hoping the rocks would have told you something.”

“Not down this far. I've never seen these sorts of rocks before, never mind heard about them. We're down farther than any humans have ever been, I'd say.”

“Hmm, I guess so,” the General said.

Leon wasn’t sure what to say next. Being in that place had been once of the strangest experiences of his life, and that was saying something, as his life had been filled with very strange things lately.

Please God, let me have picked the right way...we can’t afford any more screw-ups.

The robots broke up in two groups, one in front and one behind the humans. Together they went down the tunnel in the direction Leon had chosen.

But they didn't get too far before a familiar voice boomed out behind them, echoing in the tunnel.

“That's not the way, humans!” said the Lizard Zeezac.

The robots spun around and fixed their guns on the Lizard.

“Hold your fire!” the General called out.

The robots didn't shoot, much to Leon’s relief; he dearly wanted to ask the Lizard if he had picked the correct way out. Apparently he hadn’t.

“Lower your weapons,” Marks ordered the robots.

The robots aimed their guns at the ground and stood watching, thinking about the other weapons and options for battle they had at their disposal, should they need them.

“Thank God we found him! I picked the wrong way. I’m so sorry...” Leon said, close to tears, the exhaustion and stress catching up to him.

“Don’t worry son, you picked the way I would have chosen as well,” the General told him.

“General,” the Lizard called out, walking forward.

“Zeezac! Good thing we ran into you again, we were getting lost. Where did you go?” the General said.

“I had an errand to run,” the Lizard said, then turned around. There were other Lizards behind Zeezac, a smaller adult and two juvenile ones.

“Your family?” the General said, peering behind Zeezac.
